Amelia Barber

Amelia Barber is a group leader at Research Center Borstel and full (W3) professor at Kiel University (CAU). Her overarching research aims to is understand how fungi cause human disease through the lenses of genomics, ecology, and clinical mycology. As part of this, she is interested in defining novel mechanisms of antifungal resistance, how ecological interactions shape human pathogenicity in human fungal pathogens, and the genomic and phenotypic relationship between closely related pathogenic and non-pathogenic species.

She earned her doctorate from the University of Utah studying host-pathogen interactions during E. coli infection before switching to the wonderful world of fungi. During her postdoctoral period at the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute and University of Würzburg, she investigated the impact of azoles fungicides on the ecology and population structure Aspergillus fumigatus and the comparative and population genomics of pathogenic Aspergillus and Candida species. Prior to her current role at Research Center Borstel and CAU, she was a junior group leader at Friedrich Schiller University Jena in the Excellence Cluster Balance of the Microverse.
